Keys to Swansboro-White Oak
So few times have I encountered two opposing football teams who I feel are the exact replicas of one another.
Friday’s Swansboro-White Oak game is an exception.
I have deemed this contest a battle of strength as both the Pirates (1-0) and Vikings (1-1) depend a great deal on their efforts in the weight room to be successful. And the two clubs have certainly hit the weights hard as they both have their fair share of strong players. That said, I believe the outcome will then not come from which side is stronger, but instead several other aspects.
Here they are:
- Devein Davis: This kid can fly and he proved that last week in WOHS’ win over Richlands with a 59-yard punt return for a touchdown. I believe special teams play will be a difference, not just in kicking, but in returning. Field position will be a key.
- Swansboro’s defensive front: Since last spring, I have been a fan of the Pirates’ Cornelius Watkins. Not only his he a solid discuss thrower, he is also a fine defensive end. He, along with his defensive line teammates will have to play well by limiting Vikings RB Adrain Williams (a key to the game himself) if SHS is to win.
- Signal-callers: Entering this season, quarterback’s Trevor Chambers of Swansboro and Nate Brown of WOHS combined for a lot starting inexperience on varsity, therefore, a difference in this game will be which one has progressed the most. Not a lot has bene asked from the both of them as both clubs have back capable enough to help them establish a good run game.
