Devilpups win Classic
Steve King must have had a bittersweet moment Saturday night.
The assistant basketball coach for Lejeune watched as the Devilpups defeated Richlands 69-62 in overtime to win the National Dodge Onslow County Classic at Swansboro.
King was obviously thrilled that his side took the title, but perhaps a little hurt too. You see, King this season returned to help Lejeune head coach Doug Erny following his retirement from his teaching and basketball coaching duties at Richlands.
The fact the Devilpups and Wildcats played in the final meant the third time King has to see his former program and many of his former players on the other side.
I actually joked with Erny early Saturday afternoon that he sould get himself ejected so that King could coach against his former team.
Erny wasn’t about to do that. If so, he would have a missed a fine performance from the Devilpups.
Lejeune scrapped its way to the tournament title by playing good defense and making key free throws.
Congrats to the Devilpups for the big tournament victory.
