Lacrosse made championship sport
The NCHSAA concluded its three-day winter meeting Wednesday and approved several items, including sanctioning boys and girls lacrosse as a championship sport.
The number of games, seasons and postseasons will be discussed later.
Also,
- The NCHSAA changed the start of basketball season for the 2009-10 season, making the start one week later. The initial practice can be on Nov. 9 with the first game Nov. 16. In two different weeks of the season a team can play four games in one week, but the fourth game must be on a non-school day.
- The NCHSAA also approved its staff to look into using a 24-team bracket in 1-A dual team tennis playoffs and also approved allowing tennis teams to play four matches in a week if that fourth match takes place on a non-school day.
- Starting next school year, it will be a requirment for the STAR Sportsmanship program to be finished by any student-athlete, coach of administrator who is ejected or disqualified from a contest before be or she returns to play.
- Change policy regarding fighting where a team whose players or coaches tally three individual ejections for fighting. (Current system is fourpeople get ejected for fighting in one incident then they will lose playoff rights.)
- Approved budget 2008-09.
- Raised ticket prices for regional basketball tournament games from $8 to $9.
